Announcing- LAKEHOUSE!

Women over 50 are the fastest increasing group of people experiencing housing instability in Australia-often as a result of pay inequity, inadequate superannuation contributions, divorce, family violence, illness and taking time off work to raise children. Here at the Y, we’re all too aware of this growing phenomenon.

We currently address it through our Pathways to Independence program, which works with this cohort of older women to provide information and referrals to support services. We’re also able to assist with emergency housing or resources and advice to navigate the housing system in Victoria.

However, the problem is just continuing to grow- and as we approach the colder months in Melbourne, we have decided that we need to come up with a solution.

That solution is Lakehouse- a “pop up” housing project we’re developing, renovating and furnishing with the help of our fantastic corporate partners, giving us the capacity to keep nearly 40 older women safe, warm and supported for the next 18 months.

Lakehouse will be a co-living facility situated in South Melbourne- within close proximity Albert Park Lake, South Melbourne Market, Clarendon Street shopping precinct and frequent public transport.

Each room will have its on own ensuite facilities, small bar fridge, double bed and mattress, bedside side table, bedside lamp and tall lamp.

Best of all, we’re still taking applications from women over 55 who are homeless or under housing stress. For all enquiries, please contact YWCA Housing on 8341-8700 or email the Team Leader at [email protected].

We're doing it all with the help of our partners, who are helping us to transform Lakehouse into a home- Metricon, Residential Group, Dezign Electrics, Reece, Ades Dingley Plumbing, Two Good, Tonner Transport, Kitchen Innovations, All Over Bins, Bunnings Port Melbourne, Prime Group, Silver Chef, Milton Group, Sigma, Caspacare, City of Port Phillip, Lord Mayors Charitable Fund, Rotary - South Melbourne and DHHS. Check out some progress photos below.

Lakehouse opens officially on July 20th. You can help us fund more projects like this by donating here.
